Providing Leadership in Our Region Since 1997, GCF has provided leadership by working with other grantmakers on a cluster of initiatives to address some of the most pressing needs in our community, including improving race relations, neighborhood revitalization and increasing regional cooperation.
In 2002, GCF conducted a “community listening” process to identify additional priority community issues in our six grantmaking areas. More than 300 community leaders and volunteers participated. As a result of these conversations, GCF committed $2.2 million over five years to four new initiatives. Click here for a complete copy of our Future Directions II report.
What is a community leadership initiative? GCF’s community leadership initiatives are characterized by strategic partnerships between grantmakers, creating a greater impact than any one foundation or corporation could accomplish alone. These initiatives usually involve multi-year grants and provide nonprofit partners with technical assistance and training programs. GCF’s community leadership initiatives embody the following principles:
collaboration among funders and nonprofits
leveraging resources
encouraging citizen participation
changing systems
building on community strengths and assets
